Chapter Six

I turned the corner onto Rolling River Road and nearly slammed into an anti-gun couple holding hands and walking toward the square.

“Excuse me,” I said out of breath.

“Oh sorry,” the blond-haired woman said, moving to the side.

The couple stared wide-eyed at me.

Although only a tiny breeze blew this afternoon, it brushed cool against my belly. I looked down at my T-shirt. It had unglued itself from my skin at some point—probably from all the dashing about. The bottom of it sat scrunched up just below my bra line. I tugged it down over my stomach and as close to my waist as it would stretch.

I smiled and jogged toward the square, but it was too late. Sheena was long gone, lost in the human shuffle. Even with my short stop, I didn’t understand how she could have outrun me in those ridiculous flip-flops.

I headed back the way I’d come, passing the pair again and ending up on Walnut Street. Mandy stood in the same spot I’d left her a little while ago.

“What happened? Where is she?” she asked.

“I lost her. Too many people.” I continued to walk toward the peace quartet who moved together down the street toward the square.

“It’s nearly two o’clock,” Kiki told us. “We’ve got to get to the square for Lyle’s speech.”

“Is it still on?” I asked.

“Yes. The gun crowd marched down to Glen Spring Park,” she said.

“Yeah. We’ll be able to listen in peace,” Gloria muttered.

“Callie, what about Sheena and your luggage?” Mandy asked.

“We know where my bag is. We’ll get it when we return to the lodge.”

Now that I knew Sheena was a poser and really a member of the gun rights group, she’d be busy with them and probably wouldn’t be back to the hotel until five or so. We’d be back there by three thirty or four. That would give me plenty of time to retrieve it. I smiled, imagining myself back in my own cozy, loose clothes. I tugged again on Mandy’s top and sucked in my stomach.
